Microsoft has announced some changes on the horizon for its browser. Ie has succumbed to much criticism in the last few years. It has been accused of being bloated, old, insecure, and feature deprived. The surge in phishing scams, spyware, and exploits have only added fuel to the fire. And when Firefox began erroding market share, it seemed that the hand of Gates and Co. had been forced. Microsoft announced that they will have a new version of Ie (beta) ready by mid 2005. Microsoft also acquired Giant Company Software in December, which it quickly utilized to provide a beta anti-spyware program.
These moves come as no surprise. Microsoft’s modus operandi seems to emcompass consuming businesses that thrive in a strategic area. This provides immediate results to needed areas. …The spyware area is a case in point. But do these moves mask an underlying weakness? Does Microsoft’s fundamental tenet of interoperability and seamlessness constitute a massive security oversight? I can see Unix ops drooling.
