One of the big complaints that I hear is that one’s internet connection has slowed way down. Here are some things you can check to improve your internet connection:
1. Run a spyware check - This is hands down the biggest culprit of slow internet connections. You may have multiple trojans/malware vying for internet connectivity. I like to use this in conjunction with Spybot Search and Destroy.
2. Do a free virus scan - you can be one of the first ones to try trend micro’s new beta scanning system. It incorporates a virus and security scan. …This will give you a quick and easy way to view your infection level.
3. Make sure you have virus scanning software on your local machine - I am linking to mcafee, but I know others may prefer other virus scanning packages. One thing to keep in mind is that many virus vendors now include whole system security suites with virus scanning. These will affect home network sharing capability. If you install it, and suddenly find that you can’t browser other computers or some programs don’t work, the security suite is probably why. And make sure you enable automatic updates, if it isn’t enabled by default.
4. Do a quick NetStat Live check - AnalogX is a pretty cool site with many neat utilities. This one allows you to view your throughput.
5. Do an old fashioned netstat - This simple little command line utility can show you what is calling out and on what port. If you see, for instance, a ton of calls utilizing smtp and you aren’t using an email program, you may have been infected with an email virus with integrated smtp engine.

Great post! When running the spyware check it found 3 on my PC. Thanks for the tip.
Recently, I upgraded to a connection with 7000/768, but was only getting 1500/760 or so. A program called “TweakMaster” that I found after a little while will automate connection optimization on your registry settings. It’s a lot easier than searching through to find the right TCP Receive Window setting.
