Internet2

Internet2 SpeedDo you remember when you switched from dial-up to broadband? It might have taken a while to let all the repercussions set in. Suddenly, having a stand-alone computer wasn’t enough. The internet became integral to your computer. And all of that is about to change, again. Internet2 BackboneThe diagram is showing you the times for downloading the movie The Matrix. Do you see that ittie bittie box on the left? That’s the download time on the Internet2. I did a double take. Yes, you are reading that right. It would take a whole 30 seconds to download the entire DVD version of The Matrix using Internet2. Can you say “holy snikies.” Now, one of the massive improvements that will happen with Internet2 will be IPv6. So what, right? Wrong. The current transmission protocol, tcpip, is terrible. The security issues alone are gigantic. TCPIP was never supposed to be used in internet form. It works really well within a physically secure network, i.e. military. But I digress. IPv6 is much better in many regards. One such advantage is that of multicasting. Multiples users currently have their own channel to video and audio on the internet. Again, so what, right! Wrong again. IPv6 allows multiple users to share a channel. This means that massive video/audio feeds on the internet will be possible, affordable, and easier to manage. Internet2 will radically change things. Right now you may find it at a local educational institution. In the future, you may find it in your home. Don’t hold your breath though.

In the morning before I had read this, I was talking with a co-worker of mine about the notion that in the not-too-distant future, I imagine that video content will be available on-demand from the general internet. Perhaps even broadcast TV? I believe it’ll happen and the cable and telco’s need to beware!

Good for us consumers, though eh?

I believe some local colleges in Boston are using Internet2 already. I can’t beleive how fast it is! Can you imagine 5 , 10 years from now. We may be to get an entire row of the Blockbuster Library in the time it takes to turn your head.

Anybody know what kind of infrasture changes would be required? I’m guessing if it’s substantial then it could be a very long wait, if ever. But man wouldn’t it be sweet.
