As integration of everyday mechanical systems and computer systems increases, the fear of computer virus infection becomes more valid. Rumors had been flying that bluetooth viruses could affect the onboard computers of some Lexus models. Months ago, Toyota had released a statement saying that their cars did not use the Symbian OS and couldn’t be affected by bluetooth viruses. This OS has been exploited in cell phones as of late. F-Secure decided to put the rumor to the test. Toyota lended them a Prius, since it is built with the same bluetooth technology as the Lexus line, for complete security testing.…
They infected some cell phones with Cabir variants and proceeded to see if a “drive-by” infection could happen. It couldn’t. Then they tried sending an infected SIS file to the car. The Prius simply wouldn’t accept the file. So, the F-Secure team tried all known bluetooth exploits and still couldn’t produce an infection. This is good news for bluetooth enabled cars. But how long will it take before this is a reality? Time will tell. But for now, no one can remotely control your car - which is good.
