Technology Convergence

By admin | May 5, 2005

Convergence is a word that you should keep in your back pocket. As I survey the technological landscape, I see so many things converging that it’s really overwhelming. Convergence also tends to bring augmentation. So many big words, let’s break that down a little. Convergence is simply a word that describes when two, or more, technologies come together. Augmentation simply means that the new technology is greater, more powerful than the preceding ones. Let’s look at a few examples.

Internet TV is a great example. You can go to wwitv and watch tv broadcasts. The lineups seem a little anemic, but it’s an interesting start. WebTvList is another one. …The Open Media Network seems a little more polished. That’s all exciting, because it brings the world of TV broadcasting to your computer. Better yet, it brings the global world of TV broadcasting. This makes your choices more varied. But it still excludes the other side of the equation - you. Say you want to produce your own TV material. That’s where DTV comes in. This is a very interesting technology that is being produced in open source. It’s a destop TV application. But what is more interesting, to me at least, is their broadcast machine, built on the blogtorrent technology. Now, you can produce great, full screen content and publish it easily, with virtually no cost. That’s incredible.

There are plenty more examples to be discussed, but they will have to wait.
