Ossur, whose headquarters are in Iceland, manufactures prosthetic devices. They are breaking ground to make peoples’ lives easier. The Rheo Knee, pictured to your left, is their first bionic product. Rheo Knee monitors different factors at a rate of 1,000 times a second. And Rheo constantly adapts to a person’s gait. This allows for a much more fluid walk. If the person is carrying a heavy object, Rheo adapts to the added load. Changes in terrain, such as a ramp or stairs, are also automatically sensed by Rheo. This may seem inconsequential to a person who doesn’t have prosthetics, but it is huge improvement for those who do have them. It is allowing folks to have a new found freedom. And that is huge. Knee settings can be changed via a HP Ipaq and a single charge will last 48 hours.
