XP Ahas!

By admin | May 18, 2005

Here are a few questions that need answering. Let’s tackle em. First, a lot of users ask me, “where is the backup feature in XP Home edition?” Good question. It’s actually on the CD. Nice, huh. XP professional installs it by default, but XP Home Edition does not. To install it, look in the CD at \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP and click on ntbackup.msi .

Sometimes, your CD recordable device is not recognized as a recordable device. Go to this MS support page for help.

Xp Searching. Sometimes, when you search, it seems to take forever. If you have a lot of compressed files, i.e. zipped files, then it may be because of them.… Disable the built-in zipped file support by typing “regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll” at the command line (start>run>type “cmd”>OK). To re-enable, type “regsvr32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll” at the command line.

XP kills ADSL connection. Ok, I admit, this is a strange one. But it does happen. XP sets the MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) for a connection at a default setting of 1500. If you are using PPOE ADSL, if you have no idea what I’m talking about - then you probably don’t, you may have a problem with this setting. The maximum MTU in a lot cases for these connections is 1492. Because of the default MTU setting in XP, it can cause the upstream ISP router to lock out your connection. You will have to call your ISP to resolve it. But it may help to point them in the MTU direction. Here are directions for changing the MTU.

My mouse moves erratically. Sometimes those mice have a mind of their own! Check out this MS document to troubleshoot it.

When I start my computer, I receive the following messages: “RUNDLL32.EXE - Entry Point Not Found: The procedure entry point ThunkConnect32 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll” or “RUNDLL - Error in NvQTwk Missing entry:NvCplDaemon.” This is due to outdated NVidia (graphics) drivers. Again, check out the ole MS troubleshooting document.

Enough for now - have a great day!
