Intel LogoIntel will be showing off the innards of their WiMax base station at this year’s Supercomm. This will allow vendors to begin making gear that will utilize it. Two flavors of base stations will be released. The first will be aimed towards high-end stations. These would be similar to cellular tower stations. The second would be produced for smaller poles or the tops of buildings. These would be less expensive. WiMax will deliver speeds similar to that of dsl and cable, but over miles. …WiMax, or 802.16a, also delivers triple-DES encryption for more secure transmissions and authentication. There are many advantages to this type of technology in terms of latency, spectral efficiency, and forward error correction. At the end of the day, WiMax could provide 70 Mbps over a 30 mile range to thousands of users.
