Memina Rocket

By admin | Dec 14, 2005

Memina RocketI have wanted to post about this for a while now. Last month I purchased a Memina Rocket, 2 GB version. There were a number of reasons that I went with the Rocket. The Memina Rocket looks cool. I love the slim line design. Memina RocketBut the Memina is also really functional. If you have ever had a jump drive that is wide - you end up disliking it because it hogs USB slots. If you’ve never had one - it is so wide that it makes utilizing the second slot impossible. The Rocket also comes with a key-chain locket which works really well. As you can see in the pics, the Rocket utilizes a flip-lid. This is a great feature. No more losing the stupid lid. …Just put up the top and spin it to the back when using the Rocket. And this thing is fast. You can search around for scientific findings on that. I don’t need those after using it. Really nice for storing all your favoritite proggies, music, whatever. All I have to do now is get my linux distro working on it.

I have a few flash drives, but what I use the most is my 20GB ipod. I usually take it with me wherever I go for the most part, and it works as a portable hard drive. Works perfect for me.

I bought the 1GB version of this drive without realizing that you cannot use it as a boot drive. Evidently the “Pocket Rocket” version (which is slower than the Rocket) is bootable but not the Rocket.

Since I wanted to use this drive as a bootable diagnostics and utility drive I was very disappointed. I have other flash drives that boot fine but they have neither the speed nor the storage capacity of the Rocket. It seems to me a terrible mistake for Memina to have marketed this drive without provisions for making it bootable.

I have tried without success to contact Memina and www.memina.com is now either non-existent or their server is almost always down.

Dave, i use my memina drive as a boot drive, running a linux security distro. I had some trouble setting it up because it shows as a scsi device. What exactly are you tring to boot?

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

That you have had success using this device for a Linux boot is encouraging.

I am trying to make it boot to Windows 98 DOS. I have tried the built in Windows format procedure and the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool on an XP system using DOS system files from a hard drive folder and from a bootable floppy.

I have also done a Windows format and system file transfer from a computer running Windows 98. (This method works on other USB drives.)

It may well be that for Microsoft systems that this device will not support booting, but I welcome any suggestions.

P.S. I have also tried the “U-Storage” security software from Memina’s website (that six or so months ago when there was a website) which may be used to make the PocketRocket into a boot disk. I had no success using this utility did not make the Rocket bootable for DOS.

I do not understand the noise about the Memina Rocket 2GB and 4GB. I bought both to replace a couple of old Knaguru’s. Big mistake. Not only they are pricey but have given me nothing but trouble, where I lost data in several occasions (with both drives). The old Kanguru’s still work flawlessly. Memina tech support sent me an utility that reformatts the drive. Well, it does, but I loose the data and have to repeat this process almost every other time I use it. Conclusion: I wasted the money and don’t use them anymore. Is it possible that, by coincidence, I got two lemons? It would be too much of a coincidence and by my conversation with their tech support, they are aware of these problems.

Hey Zecka, when did you speak with memina last? There website has been gone for quite some time now. I thought they went out of business. By the way, I have the 1GB rocket and haven’t had any problems with it. It’s been over a year now and I’ve never lost any files on it. The swing cap is getting a little loose though and won’t stay in the closed position. Otherwise a great drive and really, really fast!
