VirtuSphere.jpgVirtusphere is bringing virtual reality to the military, among other clients. Virtusphere is an immersive virtual reality product that utilizes doppler. The participant stands in the ball and wears goggles. The goggles display the virtual landscape. When the participant starts to move, two doppler guns monitor spin and direction. This is translated into motion on the participant’s headset. The headset has accelerometers and magnetometers that monitor the orientation of the participant’s head. If the person moves her head left, then the landscape shifts accordingly.

The great thing about the system is that the user is immersed in the virtual world. They fatigue like they would on the battlefield. And their sight is limited to that of the real world. Urban combat becomes chaotic, stressful, and tiring. Because of the flexibility of the Virtusphere, the Marines are currently testing its viability. This would be ideal because overseas training is expensive and difficult. Also, this would be nice to place on ships so people could do training en route. Couple that with real world landscapes and you have a great testing environment. Now I just need them to send me a review unit!
