alfacleaner.jpgI love when companies create a problem and then offer a solution! Alfacleaner is a nasty little program that will annoy you to no end. Unfortunately, the removal process is not super straight forward or easy. But, with a little help and a little work, you can rid yourself of this malware. And now, before we get started, here is my standard disclaimer: If you do this incorrectly you could really hose your system. You are assuming that risk! Nuff said, let’s get started.

extract.jpgFirst, go and download Smitrem.exe. Save it to your desktop so that it’s easy to find. Go ahead and run it by double clicking on the smitrem.exe. Click on the start button to start extracting the software to a folder. While we’re here - go get a copy of HiJackThis. Download it to your desktop and extract it to C:\HiJackThis.

Now, go to the control panel and add/remove programs. Look for any signs of Alfacleaner.com or Desktop Uninstall. If you see them, uninstall them. If you are asked to reboot - don’t do it at this time. I now want you to shut down your computer - don’t restart, select “shut down.” Ok, once it’s shut down, I want you to restart your PC into Safe Mode. This is easy. Start your PC and immediately start hitting the F8 key (usually above your number keys) every second. Be methodic - and keep hitting F8. This will bring you to the startup menu. Select “Safe Mode” from the list.

Now, once you’re in Safe Mode, go to the HiJackThis folder on C:. You can find this from My Computer and going to the C drive. Once there, double click on HiJackThis.exe. Press Scan. After it’s done scanning, put a check mark only next to the following items:

  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell321.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\intell321.exe
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlfaCleaner] C:\ProgramFiles\AlfaCleaner\ AlfaCleaner.exe
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
  • O23 - Service: AlfaCleanerService - AlfaCleaner.com - C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner\ACServer.exe

After you put a check next to these items, press the “fix” button and then close HiJackThis. Now, see if there are the following folders under C:. If there are, please remove them:

  • C:\Program Files\AlfaCleaner\
  • C:\Windows\System32\intell321.exe
  • C:\Windows\System32\voi640.exe
  • C:\Windows\warnhp.html
  • C:\winstall.exe
  • C:\Windows\uninstDsk.exe
  • C:\Windows\System32\voi271.exe

Ok, take a deep breath - you’re almost there! Now, go the Smitrem folder on your desktop. Double click into it and find RunThis.bat. Yours may just say RunThis, depending on how your folder views are set up. Read through the screens and press the appropriate keys. This tool will start any uninstallers you need to run. Press the uninstall buttons each time. At the end, your desktop will disappear and you will see text running across the screen. Don’t be alarmed - this is normal! At the end, Smitrem will run the disk cleanup utility. Go ahead and run this.

When this is done, reboot the computer. Start internet explorer. Go to “Tools” and then “Internet Options.” Click on the “Programs” tab and click “Reset Web Settings.” Click “Ok” to exit. Now, go back to the control panel. Go to “Display.” Click on the “Desktop” tab and click “Customize Desktop.” Click on the “Web” tab and under “Web Pages” you should see and entry that says something like “Security Info.” If it’s there, select it and then press “delete.”

Reboot and run spywareguide’s xcleaner. You can find it on my right toolbar. Congratulations! Go get a coffee and relax a bit.
