JDiskReport Shows Disk Usage

filesizepie.gifA while ago a client’s server got hacked. What tipped me off? Well, it would be about 1% of the space left on the raid array. Obviously, they weren’t that concerned about getting caught. They did, however, at least hide the information away on the array. So, I got this utility to see where the information was being stored. That tipped me off to a hidden directory that housed ftp’d contents. It was a pretty impressive collection of stuff. Anyway, you will have other, more practical uses for this though…

As the picture above shows, one of the views helps you see disk utilization. This helps you make decisions on what files/folders are sucking up valuable disk space – and what to delete. It also will help you see what users are just being space leaches. If you manage multiple users at home, kids are great at just killing disk space. This could lead you to making disk quotas for particular users to keep their disk space usage under wraps.

A very fun, and useful, view is by file type. This view allows you to see exactly how much space picture and video files are using up. It can also help you see how much programs (.exe) files are taking up. And it also has a top 100 file hogs. This is the top 100 biggest files on your drive or volume. Go find those resource hogs.
