Philips Puts Freeze on Commercials

By admin | Apr 24, 2006

tv04_med.jpgOk, there are good ideas and then there are bad ideas. I think this one would fall into the latter category. In fact, this idea will probably make you start doing what this fella has done. According to MSNBC:

“A patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office says researchers of the Netherland-based consumer electronics company have created a technology that could let broadcasters freeze a channel during a commercial, so viewers wouldn’t be able to avoid it.”

Philips electronics said later in its patent filing that users who were wishing to get rid of the advertisements could pay broadcasters to turn them off. Oh, that’s nice. So, we get a choice of whether or not to get advertisements - we just have to pay to turn them off. I can already do that - it’s called Tivo! I admit, however, that they do have to monetize their offerings some how. They’re fighting the stream here though.
