firefox-protection.jpgThe internet used to be like the Wild West. People kinda did what they wanted. And people were being exploited. Things have been cleaned up a bit, but security is still a problem. If you’re a fan of Firefox, you might want to check out these plugins. They’re just another layer of protection in a hostile environment.NoScript - Extra protection for your Firefox: NoScript allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content only for trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site. This whitelist based preemptive blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality.

SiteAdvisor - SiteAdvisor is a free plugin from McAfee. SiteAdvisor’s engineers built a system of automated robots to test every Web site, download, and e-mail sign-up form on the Web. Web sites are tested for excessive pop-ups and other annoyances. So far we’ve tested sites representing more than 95% of worldwide Web traffic. Downloads are tested for viruses and bundled adware, spyware or other unwanted programs. We’ve tested more than 700,000 to date. Sign-up forms are completed using a one-time use e-mail address so any subsequent spam can be tracked. Our bots receive mail from more than one million places already. Site Report pages document every SiteAdvisor test.

NetCraft anti-phishing toolbar - Netcraft is an Internet services company based in Bath, England. They mainly do security testing. They have a great phishing toolbar for ff aptly called the NetCraft toolbar. The toolbar traps suspicious URLs containing characters which have no common purpose other than to deceive. It also enforces display of browser navigational controls (toolbar & address bar) in all windows, to defend against pop up windows which attempt to hide the navigational controls. And it clearly displays sites’ hosting location, including country, helping you to evaluate fraudulent urls (e.g. the real citibank.com or barclays.co.uk sites are unlikely to be hosted in the former Soviet Union).

PasswordMaker - If you’re like most people, you have a few passwords that you use over and over again on many different websites. You know this isn’t secure, but you do it anyway. Why? Because it’s difficult to remember a unique password for each and every web site that requires one. PasswordMaker manages all your online accounts using either new, uncrackable passwords it creates, or your existing passwords. It even automatically populates webforms for one-click login. Moreover, passwords aren’t stored anywhere–they are calculated over and over again as they’re needed–so there’s nothing to be lost, hacked, or stolen!
