Metal Storm, Inc. is a multinational defense company. They have made a pinless firing mechanism. If you know something about guns, you will understand the significance of that statement. But, if you don’t, here goes a simple explanation. In a typical gun, bullets are loaded into a firing chamber and hit with a firing pin. The bullet casing contains explosive powder and the bullet. The powder ignites, propelling the bullet away from gun at high velocity. I’m sure someone can correct me on my terminology – I’m not an expert. Metal Storm has created a way to do away with the mechanical means of firing.

Metal Storm utilizes an electronic firing system. This allows projectiles to be stacked within the barrel. The projectiles are then fired sequentially out of the barrel. This allows for incredibly fast projectile deployment – to the tune of 1 million rounds per minute. Metal Storm pushes the lack of moving, mechanical parts – because that means less points of failure. These systems can be put into handguns, remote standalone units, on drones, etc.
