SpotScout has come up with a cool idea. And it’s one that will probably have multiple applications. SpotScout allows for, well, parking spot reservations via a social network. This is great because you will know, before you leave your location, that you will have a parking spot when you show up. That’s pretty cool. I mean, how many times have you been all pumped up to go somewhere and then you spend like 30 minutes trying to find a parking spot? I hate that. Now, you can log on (well, you will be able to shortly, once the service launches) and reserve that spot.
…
But here’s where I think things can get very interesting. Let’s say you live downtown and have some primo parking spot - that’s right, your private parking. SpotScout will allow you to rent out your spot. That’s something that can work both ways. You get money for your parking while your away, and someone gets a great parking spot all to themselves.
And SpotScout can really help out the parking garage owner. How nice would it be to rent out that space that is always underutilized? I think most owners would go for a service like that. And there’s a built in rating system - sort of like Ebay. So, if you consisently do bad business, the network will take care of itself. I like that built in accountability. But there’s also a “green” angle to it as well. Stop people going around in circles for 30 minutes - and stop polluting the air. Yeah, every little bit counts. It will be interesting to see if this takes off.
