Man, have you ever been around someone who’s breath is intolerable? Or maybe you are the one with the bad breath. It makes conversation really painful. You can practically taste those noxious fumes coming out of their mouth. And forget about kissing someone with bad breath. Nir Sterer and Osnat Feuerstein of the Hebrew University - Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Department of Prosthodontics have found that exposing the oral cavity to blue wavelengths of light could help your or your friend’s bad breath problem.
…
Now, the simple explanation for the cause of bad breath is the presence of bacteria within the mouth cavity. This can sometimes be caused gum disease. In any effect, bacteria plays a crucial role in bad breath. These researchers exposed bad breath saliva samples to a “xenon light source for 30, 60, 120 and 240 s.” Then the sample odor was scored by two judges. Then “the levels of volatile sulfide compounds (VSC) were measured using a sulfide monitor (Halimeter), the microbial population was assessed using viable counts and microscopy.” What was the result? Bad breath was decreased. The amount of bacteria decreased and the noxious fumes were dismissed. Don’t be surprised then if you see blue light treatments coming to a dentist’s office near you.
