World Trade Center.jpgSo here we are. It is the eve of the fifth year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. As a matter of fact, I am sitting here watching a show on it. It is going to be the air we breathe tomorrow. There are so many reasons that the entire nation mourned. There were so many losses. I’m removed from the event and still get emotional about it. I simply can’t imagine the pain of those who lost loved ones. I know that pain can never be erased. And I know nothing compares to being physically present with people as they grieve. But technology has helped people work through some of their grief. Here are some examples:

  • World Trade Center Survivor’s Network - This is a great initiative to bring healing to folks affected by the tragedy. They give numerous resources for financial help, counseling, art resources, etc.
  • 2996 Tribute - The 2996 project is an effort to have a network of bloggers write individual tributes to each person who was lost in the bombing. Great idea.
  • YouTube Tributes - there are people spending their time making movies to honor those lost.
  • Legacy 9/11 Board - Legacy provides online guest books for major magazines around obituaries. They created one for the 9/11 attacks and have had 4 million visitors and over 150,000 guest book entries.
  • My Good Deed - And here is another great use of technology, spreading a good message that puts people into action. They are trying to turn peoples’ grief into great action. “myGoodDeed.org is the official Web site of One Day’s Pay Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit public benefit corporation that was founded in 2002 to honor the victims, family members, and survivors of the attacks on America, as well as the rescue and recovery workers and the thousands of volunteers who gave so much on and following September 11. We pay tribute to them by working to establish September 11 as a National Day of Voluntary Service, Charity and Good Deeds, and by encouraging individuals, employers and groups to perform good deeds during the week of September 11 each year.”

Well, there are some ways that technology can help us with 9/11. I think they show a great thread that runs through America. I feel the same away about these efforts as I did watching people helping others on that day. So much charity and goodwill. It made me really proud to be an American.
