Firefox Hack & Trick Smackdown

go-england.jpgThe more I use Firefox, the more I like it. One of the great features of Firefox is its extendability. Another one is its hackability. There is a whole community of developers, hacks, and enthusiasts who are actively working to improve Firefox. If you’re not in the game, you should seriously think about it. Ok, enough talking, grab your face paint – this is going to get ugly.

  • Firefox HTTP pipelining – I already highlighted this feature a while ago, but we’ll kick it again. Type “about:config” in your firefox address line. This shows your user configuration. Now, scroll down to the following values and change them to the values in parantheses:
  • network.http.pipelining (true)
  • network.http.pipelining.maxrequests (8)
  • network.http.proxy.pipelining (true)
  • Suppressing Firefox Browsing History – here’s a simple hack. Search on your computer for “history.dat” Once you have found it, right click the file, and select “read only.” Note: you have do this when Firefox isn’t running. Now firefox browsing history will be impeded.
  • StumbleUpon Firefox Plugin – If you haven’t heard of StumbleUpon, you will. It is becoming a very popular social networking plugin. StumbleUpon is basically channel surfing for the web. The important difference is that users rate the best websites on the net and other users to visit them. A nice, viral idea.
  • Change Firefox CSS – There is a file in your profile folder named “userChrome-example.css” If you remove the “-example” part of this filename you can tweak Firefox css to your heart’s content. There is css out there already done for you too.
  • Nuke Anything Enhanced – this plugin allows you to remove page contents before printing. It can also remember your preferences if you visit a particular page often.
  • BugMeNot – this interesting plugin “bypasses compulsory web registration via Firefox’s right-click context menu.” Be careful when doing this with paid registration sites – that’s theft.
  • FareWatcher – a cool plugin to “Get instant U.S Domestic Flight fares, and get notified when a flight meets your criteria, excellent for watching flights to get the best deal out there!”
  • Tab Mania – these are some cool, amazing, and strange tab plugins:
    • Tabbrowser – chalk full of goo features.
    • Tab Preview – a nice, simple plugin that allows you to preview background tabs.
    • Tab Mix Plus – this is a plugin for Firefox tabbing. Tab Mix Plus “includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more. It also includes a full-featured session manager with crash recovery that can save and restore combinations of opened tabs and windows.”
  • Reveal – Reveal is like Mac’s Expose feature. It allows you to see screenshots of your tabs.
  • GMail Space – Send documents from your hard drive to your gmail account space. How cool and convenient is that?
