Brunton SolarPort Review

brunton-solarport-44.jpgThis is another Edmund’s Scientific goody. How would you like to take your cell phone, mp3 player, gps units, pda’s, etc. far away and still be able to use it? The Brunton SolarPort allows you to do that. I was impressed with the casing on this thing. Sure, it’s still the awkward photo voltaic cells that are encased here, but that’s ok. It’s a sturdy case that has cool extras. The power cord is sneakily hidden on the case hinge. And the tip can be exchanged with various tips. Two are included. And this thing is easily switched on polarity for international use. There is a simple switch from 6v to 12v, a test switch (with green LED), a daisy chain outlet, and a USB charge port. And the unit also comes with a battery charger unit (AAA and AA).

Here are some specs:

  • Max. Output: 4.4 Watts, 12V or 6V
  • USB output: 5Volts, 500mAh
  • 12V vehicle port in hinge
  • Polycrystalline solar panel construction
  • Link multiple units together for increased power with concealed 20″ adapter cable

Bottom line is that this is a very portable solar unit. If you’re looking for a unit that will stand up under wear and tear, this is it. It isn’t waterproof, so it’s not good for water trekking. But it does a great job of recharging batteries and small electronics via the hidden power cord and USB port. I like this thing. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
