In an age of ubiquitous software, there really isn’t any excuse not to have almost any software you want. Linux offers almost anything you can dream of for free. It really is staggering. And the setups are becoming much easier and sophisticated. If you haven’t given Linux a try, you should. But, if you are using Windows and are looking for some free anti virus options – here u go. Realize, these are usually available for home users. Please don’t use them if you are a small business. There are fee based anti virus solutions for you.
Windows Only Programs
AVG – I use this on some computers and it has worked well. Try it out.
Avast Anti Virus – It is free for home users. Let me know if you use this – I would like to hear your experience.
Avira Free AV – Again, let me know if you use it.
BitDefender – they actually have both Win and linux versions for free.

I have been a faithful user of avg for a couple of years but I received an email a few months a go that they were phasing out their free edition in 2007.
It will be ood only if the are effective.I had been using norton and windows defender in combination.Never had a problem
I have been using AVG for over 2 years now. It’s done a great job but unfortunately they won’t be continuing the free version from Jan, 07. Has anyone used Comodo? Any reviews would be good.
I have used Avast for a while now, well over 2 years. It’s done a pretty good job and has a very professional, polished interface — I’ve experienced surprisingly low amounts of system slowdown, even on my older computers (I have two oldies — one P3-500 running 98SE and another running 2000). The free version is pretty comprehensive, just doesn’t include script scanning/blocking (which would be nice). Of course, if you want that, you’ll have to go with their fee-based Pro version. But overall, it’s pretty nice…..
