It's done a pretty good job and has a very professional, polished interface -- I've experienced surprisingly low amounts of system slowdown, even on my older computers (I have two oldies -- one P3-500 running 98SE and another running 2000). The free version is pretty comprehensive, just doesn't include script scanning/blocking (which would be nice). Of course, if you want that, you'll have to go with their fee-based Pro version. But overall, it's pretty nice..... I have used Avast for a while now, well over 2 years.
