Raytheon Corporation employs 80,000 people worldwide and had annual sales in 2005 of $21.9 B. As they put it, they are trying “to be the most admired defense and aerospace systems supplier through world-class people and technology.” I have posted on Raytheon in the past, when they released their Excalibur GPS projectile. That is impressive technology. The Silent Guardian is a non-lethal weapon. It can be used in a variety of situations. It’s range is impressive and will help repel crowds, protect military assets, and provide a safety buffer.

The device utilizes millimeter wave technology. Millimeter waves are usually considered to be wavelengths from 10 millimeters to 1 millimeter with electromagnetic frequencies of 30 GHZ to 300 GHZ. This qualifies millimeter wave technology as extremely high frequency, or EHF. Millimeter wave technology has some interesting advantages. It is very high bandwidth for data communications. It also has a very narrow beamwidth. This allows it to be focused - which is very good for imaging applications. In fact, it is being used to cut through fog and clothes and do super high resolution imaging. But it can also be used like the Silent Guardian.
The Silent Guardian utilizes millimeter wave technology. It sends out a stream of energy that penetrates the skin up to 1/64th of an inch. The energy causes an “intolerable” heat sensation in the recipient that causes them to want to run. The beam can travel up to 500 yards. That can effectively set up a good safety perimeter. It could also be used in station links to secure a safety line. The Silent Guardian could also be used to secure hostile borders using the above techniques.
