zink-camera-printer.jpgHave you ever gone to a movie on a Friday night? The place is abuzz with the frenetic social interactions of young people. It’s funny to watch the girls twirling their hair at the boys, and the boys trying to act like they’re not interested. Can you imagine if they had an ultra portable printer that they could use? I’m talking the size of an ipod or smaller. Then Suzie could snap a pic with Johnny on her camera (like the one above) and print it on the spot. It would be like a portable photo booth. Well Zink has made just such a printer.

Zink is a small start up company from Massachusetts. And they have created a way to do printing without the need for ink. The secret is in the paper. The paper looks like normal paper, but it contains embedded dye crystals with a protective polymer overcoat. When the paper is heated, it activates the dye crystals. This results in a high quality and durable image. The image is smudge proof and isn’t light sensitive. And since the printer is so small, it can be embedded into all kinds of devices. It will be interesting to see what it’s used for.
