fic-neo1973.jpgPeople went bananas when the iPhone was announced. And for good reason. The iPhone is going to push the boundaries on mobile devices. Apple can use their muscle to change the way that cell phones are developed and implemented - and that’s a good thing. So I went searching to see if there were any Linux based implementations out there. I was surprised to see that there are.

OpenMoko has developed an open source mobile platform. And with the help of FIC, a leader in motherboards, has come up with the FIC Neo1973 Smartphone. This will help to push the envelope on mobile applications and customization. It is simply amazing at the breadth and the depth of Linux apps these days. OpenMoko will help bring that type of innovation to the mobile device - very exciting. Here are the latest specs:

  • 120.7 x 62 x 18.5 (mm)
  • 2.8″ VGA (480×640) TFT Screen
  • Samsung s3c2410 SoC
  • Global Locate AGPS chip
  • GSM850/900/1800/1900 compatibility for network support in Europe, Asia-
Pacific, Japan, Africa and the US
  • Ti GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
  • Unpowered USB 1.1
  • Touchscreen
  • micro-sd slot
  • 2.5mm audio jack
  • 2 buttons
  • 1200 mAh battery (charged over USB)
  • 128 MB SDRAM
  • 64 MB NAND Flash
  • Application manager to install / remove / update applications
  • Push email, contacts, and calendar synchronization
  • OpenMoko Software Development Kit (SDK) for application development

Software

  • Dialer
  • Contacts
  • Application Manager
  • Calendar
  • More…

“I’m excited because I believe carriers will see an increase in revenues from new data traffic. And being able to customize your mobile phone in any way you see fit should be very appealing to end-users,” stated Dr. Ming J. Chien, Chairman of FIC. Yes, that would be very, very appealing.

I don’t think so. You should be able to purchase these directly from FIC, http://www.fic.com.tw , when the become available. That was supposed to be last month, but they ran into some hardware issues. They’re expecting it this month now. Will retail in $350 USD range. I would love this thing!
