Midomi Recognizes Your Singing

By admin | Feb 15, 2007

midomi.gifHow many times have you heard a song while out, loved it, and then forgot the title or band? I have more times than I can count. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to find that song somehow? Well, Midomi might just be for you. Midomi is and interesting voice signature technology that matches to songs. That’s right, simply sing or whistle your song into your computer and it will attempt to match it. Well, I actually tried Radiohead’s Creep and it came up with Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand. Doh! Ok, no comments pls ;)

Actually, after a few tries it had guessed most of my songs. But it seems that the database needs more expanding to be really effective. Still, it’s pretty impressive software. But that’s not what is going to make this service popular. Midomi has set up the service around a community. That community can share songs and their recordings. They can search around for folks who share similar tastes and they can rate their recordings - egad! In any case, it seems that this service, or something similar, is already being utilized by cell phone providers to lure folks into song acquisition. That’s a neat service.

I just got a new cell phone that does a similar thing, you hold it up to the speakers or tv as a song plays and it tells you what the song is and gives you an option to download it. Its very cool….Its on the new samsung sgh-a707 phone with Cingular Music Services.

    My Review of Midomi

Midomi is an online service that lets you hum or sing a song into your computer microphone and it will supposedly recognize the song and tell you the title, artist, blah, blah, blah.

    Cool, right?

So I tried it out and sang a few bars to “You are not alone” by the genius that is R. Kelly. It guessed that I was singing “Oh Come, All Ye Faithful”.

Ok. It’s a new service, let me try a more reconizable song. I sang “SexyBack” by JT and Midomi thought I was singing “The Farmer In The Dell”. Wow.

I understand that I am not exactly Andrea Bocceli. I understand that I am not even on the level with people who are “going to Hollywood, dawg” on American Idol, but I can hum a song.

At this point I thought that maybe this service is so new that my songs are not in the database. Since it thought my last attempt was “The Farmer In The Dell”, I tried actually singing singing “The Farmer In The Dell”.

It said I was singing “As Long As You Love Me” by the Backstreet Boys.

    I hate you midomi.

I would love to hear your results from using this service. Please post them in the comments.

Postscript: My wife (who apparently thought I was recording a music video or some sort) informed me that I was lame and needed a better song. She also said, “that’s terrible”.
