Synchronizing Offline Files

Here’s the deal. You have a laptop that you like toting all over the place. Maybe you go hang out with friends and exchange photos. Or maybe it’s a business laptop and you meet with clients off-site. Whatever the deal, you may want to try this folder synchronization tip. To do this, you need to have a home base network with a way to share a folder on another computer in that network.

  1. You need to switch off fast user switching. You can do this by:
    1. Going to Start>Control Panel>User Accounts
    2. Click on “Change the way users log on or off”
    3. Uncheck “Use Fast User Switching”
  2. You need to enable “Offline Files”
    1. Right click on Start and select “Explore” from the pop up menu
    2. Go to “Tools” at the top and then “Folder Options”
    3. Select the “Offline Files” tab
    4. Check “Enable Offline Files”
    5. Check all the boxes listed there, except “Display a reminder every:” unless, of course, you want a reminder.
    6. Click “Ok”
  3. Set up your Offline File Folder
    1. This is sort of anti intuitive, but you want a folder on your home base network. So, let’s assume you have a laptop named “laptop” and a home base networked computer called “homecomputer.” To make an offline folder for your laptop, you want to go to the “homecomputer,” not the “laptop!” Find a shared folder on “homecomputer” or create a new share.
    2. Right click on the folder and select “Make available offline.”

Now, if you want Word, Excel, etc. to save to that new folder, you can adjust options within those programs to change the default folder. Just set it to your new offline file folder. Now you have instant backup.

Let me know if you want pics…I will be happy to provide ;)
