The good folks over at Cable Organizer wanted me look over a Kensington SmartSockets Surge Protector. Sure, cables and cable management aren’t the sexiest tech areas in the world, but it’s something we all deal with. And power strips and surge protectors are a necessary evil in a high tech world. Let’s get down with some details on this particular surge protector. The Kensington SmartSockets surge protector features a table top design with six power outlets. This is ideal for conference rooms where conference phones and other devices have adopted a circular carriage. The design is sleek for a power strip and includes colored labels for easy identification.
The cable is 16 feet long which allows for easy placement within a room. The Kensington SmartSockets surge protector features EMI/RF noise filtration. This is Electro-magnetic interference or Radio Frequency noise. This noise is especially annoying if it comes through a PA speaker system. The SmartSockets unit has a 1500 joule rating (this is enough for most applications) that utilizes a metal oxide varistor (MOV). The MOV functions by diverting excess voltage from the hot to the ground or the neutral. This in opposition to more expensive series-mode models that work by absorbing excess voltage and slowly releasing it when voltage levels off. The joule rating, the stylish design, and audible alarm make for an impressive unit at such a reasonable cost ($50). And Kensington also offers a $50,000 warranty for items attached to the device. It’s nice to see them standing behind their product.
