thief.jpgHow many businesses have Minolta, Xerox, or Ricoh appliances in them? If you are a small business owner, you probably have a fax, scanner, and printer appliance of some sort. Back in the day these items were pretty simple and they were definitely local devices. Now, they are full blown networkable devices. And a lot of them even have hard drives in them that store various documents. Well, all this got me to thinking. And what I found scared the tar out of me.

How many of you would like to escort someone off the street, who you don’t know, and start showing them your sensitive documents, faxes, or copies? I’m guessing that would be a big, fat zero. Well, I went out hunting on the internet to see if I could actively locate some document appliances.  Sure enough, there were lots to be perused at my leisure.  So folks, here’s the lesson in all this.  If you are using a networked document appliance, for the love, please make sure that it is not viewable to the outside world.  Small businesses are always really suspect because they don’t have full IT folks to help them out.
