After doing a 9th Grade science report on Solar Technology, I was hooked on all the stuff I saw. Not only could I wire up home-built solar cells to power LED lights and whatnot, but I could charge my gadgets in the desert, purify water, and reduce my future energy bill. Not to mention the blue photovoltaic cells look really cool under the light (no pun intended)! So, what kind of stuff are we talking about?

Largest Solar Plant on American Soil
Hillsboro, Oregon is slated to get North America’s largest solar power plant here soon. SolarWorld Group is projected to bring the 500 Megawatt solar plant online completely online in 2009, making it the biggest and most powerful plant yet. SolarWorld is also expected to have enough of the plant completed to bring a 100MW capacity online sometime in 2007. Cool, it’s big, blue, and converts energy. I’m diggin’ it. ZZZZZZzzzzorch!

Charge Your Gear in the Desert
OK, you’re in the desert. Your cell phone; the only link to civilization just died, and with it, most likely you. YET! Never fear, you have a solar battery charger. So, you just plug it into your cell phone (most chargers contain various types of hookups), and the one I have featured says it can completely charge your phone in an hour under optimal conditions. No clouds and whatnot. There are as many manufacturers of rollable-solar cells as there are gadgets to charge, and you can easily find one within your price range and within your criteria for “gadgetivity”.

Look Cool (Nerdy) While Plugging Into the Sun
Thank those Brits for this one; the Solar Cool cap is a neat idea, especially when it helps demonstrate the power of SOLAR! If you’re looking for an easy way to walk around and garner laughs, look nerdy, cool your head, the solar cool cap is a great investment. Hold your hand over the cell and the fan will stop blowing on you. I’m not sure how useful it is in the Bahamas, but you can be the first to try…

So, there you are. Hopefully you guys will check out some solar gadgetry and join me in embracing our cosmic overlord. On a more serious note, there’s a bunch of ways to utilize the sun, just go use Google; plus, not to mention that the blue cells just look cool.
