Sprint Navigation GPS Service Coming Soon

Sprint PhoneFor those of us with Sprint, this seems to be a pretty nifty development. Taking a page from Garmin and Tom-Tom, Sprint is now going to be offering a GPS-based navigation system bundled with specific Sprint data packages. With implementation being handled by the company Tele-Nav, customers picking this up will have access usually only accessible over the Internet or a special GPS gadget; for example, gas prices based on location, or turn-by-turn directions with voice feedback, even voice recognition for requesting directions.

While Sprint’s site on the matter listed things like 1) Driving Directions on your mobile phone, available by voice and onscreen, 2) Traffic alerts with reroutable…routes, and 3) Sprint Navigation’s extensive database of points of interest, I was able to find a much more robust list of features:

- Directions that respond; on-screen, turn by turn directions which speak the next command back to you
- Move-while-you-move maps which function like an in-car navigation device.
- Searchable database of over 10,000 points of interest
- Find the lowest price on gas based on location
- Inputting destination requests over speech instead of text only
- A “pedestrian” mode

And there’s also supposed to be a pre-trip planning utility available when the Sprint Navigation system is officially launched on April 1st.

You can reach most of the info, and the planning utility when it’s done, over at www.sprint.com/navigation
