Sweet; it looks like European astronomers have hit the cosmic treasure stash. They’ve found one of the first planets in known space that has the ability to sustain life. So while NASA has been taking 3d photos of our Sun, and you have been buying Apple stock, many scientists around the globe have started gathering information about Gliese 581c and it’s planetary system. For what purpose? Why, to colonize in the future, of course!
Gliese 581c is a planet resting in the “Goldilocks” zone; not too hot, not too cold. In fact, water would be liquid on it’s surface. This alone makes the prospects of life exciting to scientists. There are a number of other boons: it’s star is a Red Dwarf (ours is Yellow Dwarf) that emits reddish light; it’s more stable, though it’s brightness is significantly less than our star, and is subject to variability.
However, it’s 20 lightyears away, so until we get our Subspace drives working, or a nuclear-pulse-detonation drive operational, good luck hitchhiking your way to the Gliese system. But it’ll be good to FINALLY have a reason to gear up our interstellar fleet!
