On the opposite end of the storage spectrum as my last post, today’s topic is USB Flash drives. Actually, the post is about “10 Nifty Tricks You Can Do With Your USB Keydrive” I came across over at lifehacker. On the list is everything from speeding up Windows Vista to encrypting an entire hard drive, not to mention many, many other tricks were listed in the comments below. I couldn’t find enough use for my flash drive before, but some of these just takes the cake…
Here’s a list of the 10 things lifehacker mentioned:
There’s also a bunch of other, user-submitted ways you can “trick out” your USB flash drive mentioned in the comments below. These tricks are great for anyone on the go; businessmen, IT people, students, you name it. All you’d need is a big enough flash drive and you’re set. If you don’t have a flash drive, go check out NewEgg or Dealhack for a cheap 1GB-2GB job. I would suggest a larger one (8GB-16GB) if you’re going to use it for a mobile workstation platform or portable MP3 player or even syncing specific file formats like pictures, music, .PDFs, and database files.
Also, here’s a couple of links to good USB key deals I’m currently “taking advantage” of for these above purposes:
Kingston 2GB DataTraveler model ($17.99 before S&H)

NewEgg brand 4GB ReadyBoost model ($36.99 before S&H)
Both of these are economical, a good deal, and are USB 2.0 enabled. Excellent candidates to test out your new capabilities on, in my opinion. Finally, if you have one or two good ideas for USB tricks, go ahead and e-mail me. Next Monday, I’ll do a follow-up article posting some of your submitted ideas along with a few I’ve come up with.
