ultra-hard-drive-enclosure.jpgRecently drive space had become an issue for me.  We tend to take a lot of digital pictures and those pics are starting to add up some digital space.  I managed to get my hands on the Total Enclosure with a 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm drive sporting a 16MB buffer.   You can find at Tiger Direct for $169, minus $20 rebate.  So, once I opened the box, I was actually a little surprised by a few things.

First of all, the enclosure is pretty cheap.  And the directions for getting the feat off are pretty imprecise.  Basically, remove the screws and then gently pry the feet off at the sides – not the bottom.  They don’t just fall off.  It’s better to use something plastic so you don’t scratch the unit.  The unit itself is pretty cheap plastic, but does include a board with 2 firewire ports and 1 USB 2.0 port.  It also includes an enclosed fan.  The drive fits in this enclosure very snugly.  It will fit in there – it just takes a little coaxing.  It’s nice, however, that the unit includes both a firewire cable and a USB cable.  Chalk it all up and you have a pretty nice enclosure on the cheap.  No software to speak of – but I didn’t need that.
