Second Life Civil Unrest: “I LOL’d”

Second LifeEvery so often, the world inside of cyberspace (a.k.a. MySpace or Facebook or World of Warcraft or Second Life) really gives me a reason to chuckle, and I’m pleased to laugh at this next piece. Second Life is officially bursting at the seams: You’d think that when the population of a web service gets so large that it’s straining the capabilities of your equipment, it is usually an indication of popularity. However, this is nothing usual; apparently there is vocal dissatisfaction about the drop in quality the servers have experienced as their server loads increase. The civil unrest is highly organized, and is royally miffed by the lack of Linden Labs response and accountability. They feel so strongly, a website designed specifically to inform Linden Labs of the community’s diappointment has sprung up.

While it’s really weird to find myself saying this, but these people do have points: They are paying money (good money: over $1,600,000 exchanged hands in the past 24 hours) to enjoy this “environment” and the basic architecture cannot even keep up with the capacity needs. The Project Open Letter movement has gathered attention from all over the place, and has over 4,000 signatures at the present time; no doubt more have been watching the situation brew with a mix of glee, sadness, and confusion.

I still can’t help but laughing at some of the seriousness I’ve seen exhibited over this thing; after all, real life is FREE! Mostly, anyhow. But, if you’re paying for it, I’d expect competence and not some of which I’ve been reading on Second Life related forums (http://forums.secondcitizen.com/showthread.php?t=12315). Either way, I suspect that we could be hearing some interesting news coming out of the Second Life camp in the next few weeks.
