Microsoft seems to be really pushing into the graphic space as of late. It’s been fun to watch. Their labs recently have been displaying Photosynth, a photo stitching program that can create 3D modeling of everyday objects. You can test Photosynth out for yourself. Just note that it has higher requirements on the graphics end. Once you’re in, you can check out a few collections. The demo will have you mesmerized.
“Our software takes a large collection of photos of a place or an object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed three-dimensional space.
With Photosynth you can:
- Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle.
- Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photo whether it’s megapixels or gigapixels in size.
- See where pictures were taken in relation to one another.
- Find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing.
- Send a collection – or a particular view of one – to a friend.”
It’s pretty neat how Photosynth figures out the 3D modeling of the object based on numerous photos from different angles. And it’s fun to watch the climbers move up the mountain or to be able to browse through numerous pictures easily. I liked viewing the various camera shots and moving to those positions and seeing how the modeling was done. The zooming feature, utilizing SeaDragon technology, was also impressive. Very cool technology here. It will be interesting to see how it’s used. Definite military and civilian uses come to mind.
Here is the demo:
Thanks for the tip Scooter!
