In case you’re one of those people with an Xbox 360 and have been interested in getting the HD-DVD player add on, Microsoft, just today, announced it was cutting the price of the Xbox peripheral from $199 to $179. On top of the (somewhat meager) price drop, MS also said that those purchasing a HD-DVD add on would receive 5 free HD-DVDs with their purchase. Interestingly enough, this news comes on the tail end of a double-whammy from the Blu-Ray camp about a sales agreement with Target and Blockbuster.
On top of the free movies and price cut, some new Xbox Live Marketplace content will be going live soon; with the media release of 300 and Heroes: Season 1, promotions are occurring throughout August and September dealing with free downloads and the choice for optical content. Also, the free HD-DVDs are being given away to buyers between August 1st and September 30th; with the choices being made around a 15-movie pool. This late-Summer, early-Fall promotion looks like another way to remind you that the Xbox is the cheapest way to get your hands on a high definition movie player.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, this news comes right after word of Target and Blockbuster both inking deals with the Blu-Ray group to promote Blu-Ray discs for the upcoming holiday season. While its true the Xbox promotion has probably been in the works for a while, it now just seems like a counter-offer to the consumers still choosing sides in the format war. Perhaps that’s unfair, perhaps not. Seeing, though, as I don’t have an Xbox 360 or PS3, I’ll just have to see how this promotion pans out then…
