Walmart Launches DRM Free Online Music

By admin | Aug 22, 2007

Walmart has a penchant for crushing the competition.  Let’s see if they can do the same in the online music space.  Yep, it’s time for the Walmart online music store.  Now, having tooled over their site, you will quickly see that they offer WMA and MP3 formats.  I would personally go with the MP3 format.  The MP3 format allows complete control of the music.  The WMA file format has the usual:

“By purchasing a WMA or WMV download, you can:

  1. Download the music to 1 computer and back up music to 2 additional computers (see instructions below)
  2. Make 10 burns to a CD
  3. Make unlimited transfers to a portable device”

WMA format music seems to be selling for 88 cents/download, with MP3 music selling for 94 cents/download.  You can preview all music through the Liquid Music service.  It seems that Liquid Music is handling the delivery for Walmart.  The service features the typical Genre selections with some unique playlists.  It will be interesting if the service can beat iTunes on file format options and pricing.  Walmart has a huge reach, but iTunes is a monster of a service.
