My oh my. I remembered seeing a blurb about issues in the Pentagon in June. At the time, as is usual, the Pentagon disclaimed any absolute information, only giving us a dark view into the matter. That’s their M.O. All that I heard was that they had taken a large number of computers offline. That’s never a good sign, but even more so at a place like the Pentagon. Well, now information is coming out that the Chinese are the perpetrators of the attack.
The Financial Times quotes a high government official who said there was a “very high level of confidence…trending towards total certainty” that the People’s Liberation Army in China was to blame for the attack. Most people are speculating that unclassified material as mostly at danger in this attack, but it underscores the continuing net war.
In fact, if you haven’t looked into cyber warfare at all, I would recommend that you do so. It’s very eye opening. A great general primer of some significant events is Frontline’s “Cyber War!” You can watch the entire episode online. In that episode they document the worst breach of the DOD. It seems that someone was using a mainframe in Russia to stage a large attack on the DOD. That attack resulted in the pilfering of large amounts of classified military data. That’s when Home Simpson says, “Doh!”
