iPod Touch

iPod ClassicThose two words are enough to banish the demons of non-intuitive interfaces back to where they belong… Anyways, it’s official: Apple’s making an iPod Touch (along with a number of other variants, a few of which I will mention). As you should be able to see in the link to Jobs’ keynote address below, Apple’s been busy. 4 new (or revamped) iPods went on display at the September Apple…event…thingy, ranging from a new 160-Gig iPod Classic to an 8-Gig or 16-Gig iPod touch. The Touch is, in and of itself, a phone-less iPhone, which makes it a big deal for people who want everything about the iPhone except the hastle of AT&T or unlocking the dang thing.

iPod Touch I’m really excited about the 160-Gig classic, but, to me, the Touch isn’t all that impressive. I’m one of those types who had a mixture of impressions about the iPhone at the start, but would loved to see an iPod with that touchscreen and interface capability; especially the size that they’re talking about with these new iPod Classics. But to buy a measly 8 or 16 Gig iPhone-sans-phone for $299 or $399. Personally, as a big music fan, I can’t believe that Apple passed up slapping a 40-Gig or 80-Gig drive in one, much less, 20-Gigs. I don’t need a PDA, I need a music platform, first and foremost. While a touchscreen and a few extra apps might “sell” me, it won’t make me happy in the long run…

Anyways, here’s to some success for the new generation of iPods. I hope someone else can figure out a way to compete.
