The race seems to be on for finding new transportation modes. And whether that is a start in urban areas, or rural driving, we need a better solution. Before I move on, however, here is just a sidebar rant. Why are we hearing about these types of innovations in the rest of the world? Why is the United States not even on the radar when we talk about these types of things? One might be our over-consumptive lifestyles coupled with our desire to “have it all.” I’m sure that part of the issue is also the US safety standards in cars. Whatever the cause, we should take notes from the rest of the world.
The Air Car is a new type of car that will run on compressed air. It is the brain child of ex-Formula One engineer Guy Nègre. And it seems that Tata Motors, India’s largest auto maker, will be starting production on the car in 2008. So, if you’re traveling to India in 2008, you may just start seeing some cars propelled by air. And the end product of that car is, well, air. And what is the cost of a fill up on one of these cars? Would you believe about $2? That’s nice for the wallet, the environment, and our kids’ lungs. Refueling will take a few minutes if taken to a service station with specialized compressors. Or, the car can be refilled on home electricity in about 4 hours.
The car can go from 125-186 (200-300km) on a charge. The car itself is made of light fiber glass or hemp fiber and is glued together like a lot of aerospace technology. An on-board computer keeps track of mileage, rpms, fuel, cell calls, etc. The car makers are also looking into a security card system for car entry and ignition. Welcome to the twenty first century. Oh, and an oil change needs to be done every 30,000 miles. But what about heating? Maybe those in colder climates will need to wear their heavy coats and such. Oh well. And what of air conditioning? Seeing that I just went the entire summer in one of the hottest summers on record without it - I could do without it altogether. Enjoy some videos:
I would love to try one of these out - how about you?
