First, we had hybrid cars; now, we have hybrid trains. On October 9th, Bombardier Transportation unveiled their new “hybrid” train system in France, boasting a ‘dual mode’, dual voltage, high-capacity Autorail system. By utilizing both electric power and diesel power, hence the ‘dual mode’ label’, the Autorail Grand Capacite system will be able to interoperate between multiple transportation systems across Europe, decreasing the number of stops and lowering the amount of CO2 that is expelled in the transporting process, making this, technically, the world’s first hybrid train.
The AGC system itself has been extensively scrutinized, both by the passengers, and also the French transportation system: 21 French regions have either ordered AGC units for use in their train networks or they already use AGC units. During the presentation of the platform itself, foreign and French guests were able to give the AGC’s features a shakedown during the trip between Culmont, Saint-Didier, and Vitry.
Bombardier, who operates in 60 countries and has over 100,000 vehicles in operation worldwide, is one of the leaders of making sustainable transport environmentally friendly. With their MITRAC energy system and the recent development of the AGC hybrid train system, it’s been a growing trend among transportation companies to develop additional sustainable transportation assets. With increasingly creative fusions between the green movement and technology, interest in environmentally friendly technology, such as the AGC, has prompted giants like Bombardier to reevaluate current systems and apply a ‘friendlier’ system in it’s place, causing improvement across multiple factors, from comfort to the emission of CO2. Thankfully, as a global leader in rail transportation, Bombardier has helped bring hybrid technology to the forefront of more than just automobile transportation, and we here at PaulTech look forward to seeing what else they (or anyone else, for that matter) will come up with.
