Our roofs help keep out the elements from our home. But our roofs could also be sucking up solar energy. Why not integrate multiple functions within roof designs? Sunslates, by Atlantis Energy, do exactly that. They provide a functional and beautiful roof line. They have these solar shingles in place in various climate extremes from high altitude, to ocean-side, to desert locations, to high snowfall areas, and beyond. Sunslates can be installed by roofers and electricians. The tiles are daisy chained in groups of 24 and then run to a junction box. And the roofs are warrantied for 25 years. The typical roof uses around 300 square feet of Sunslates, with costs running around $13k per 100 square feet.
Users can earn a generous tax break due to the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This act gives folks a 30% credit, up to $2,000 on the installation of such a device. The roof will generate electricity for the grid in non-peak times, which most users can receive credit for. This will help offset peak electricity usage when folks are usually home and using plenty of electricity. You don’t have to cover your entire roof with the shingles. And different facing roofs will have differing amount of power generation with the highest being south facing roofs.
