When catastrophes happen, first responders need a fast way to triage folks.  EyeMarker, a company that came out of West Virginia University research project, has come up with a neat way to do that by looking at our eyes.

It turns out that our eyes can tell medical personnel a lot about how we are doing.  This particular offering of ocular scanning instrument (OSI) is more aimed at military and terrorist response applications.  These applications include:

  • Chemical or neurotoxin exposure
  • Cyanide ingestion
  • Carbon monoxide exposure

But potential uses don’t stop there.  Other types of brain trauma and systemic problems can be diagnosed quickly and easily.  Things like diabetes and hypertension can be identified by OSI.  This  could help both military and civil medical staff identify a myriad of issues just by looking into your eyes.
