GPS is changing the rules.  It now allows fleet owners to know where their trucks are located at any given time.  It affords runners a way to track their routes, plot future courses, and calculate run distances.  Another great use for GPS is tracking your kids.  There are car tracking systems that can plot where they are at, how fast they are driving, etc.  GTXC wants to track your loved ones through their shoes.

So, why in the world would you want to do this?  Well, if you have a wande-prone child, this could literally be a life saver.  And what about a parent with Alzheimer’s?  Again, having these types of devices could really help.  In fact, there was a local story recently where two women had wandered off from a home and perished.  Very sad – and it could have been avoided with technology like this.

The shoe incorporates GTXC’s tiny, one ounce GPS module.  This module runs to an antenna in the heel of the shoe.  This relays that GPS information to GSM cellular service.  And that information can be viewed by you on the internet.  The shoe is expected to cost between $100-$200.  The reporting service will cost an additional $10/month.

The problem with this sort of device is the antenna
system & of course power supply. There is an effect known as the urban canyon effect in places with high
buildings in city’s and mountainous terrain which is where the term comes from. the view of the antenna is blocked from seeing the overhead sat which allow the device to know its position & this is also to a lesser extent in city’s the transmission of that information by cell network but Continued…

more of a problem in mountainous terrain where the signal being transmitted from the device would not be able to get through for the same reasons. On a more light hearted note a hat with an antenna mounted on top may give a better signal, but would I think defeat the point.
