head-intellifiber.jpgSports equipment utilizes all kinds of technologies.  Massive amounts of research and design goes into producing all kinds of sports equipment.  This is also true in the area of tennis.  Manufacturers are always looking for the best tennis ball, racquet, court surface, clothing, etc.  Head developed an interesting idea for racquets that has revolutionized tennis.

Piezoelectric materials are strange materials that change mechanical energy into electrical energy.  Head took that concept and incorporated it into a tennis racquet.  This is how it works.  The tennis ball strikes the racquet.  Within the first millisecond, the piezoelectric fibers in the racquet convert the mechanical energy of the ball hitting the racquet into electric energy.  The fibers also tighten, giving the racquet stability and strength.  The result is a truer strike on the ball that is also more powerful.  That’s a smart idea.
