Not too long ago, I posted about SmartWater.  This simple liquid enabled folks to tag their personal belongings with a chemical signature.  When thieves struck, their belongings were easily identifiable based on that unique chemical signature.  Now, an Australian based company is doing something similar.  Datadots are tiny sand like signature labels that allow crime enforcement agencies to identify your belongings if they are ever stolen.

Datadots last up to 20 years.  You simply brush the dots onto your goods.  Each of the micro dots contains a snippet of self-identifying code that ties the item back to you.  This could be a driver’s license number or something else.   After you have put the datadots on your item, you can put a warning sticker on the item.    This warns would be thieves that the item is tagged with a bunch of labels that won’t come off.  Datadots sells home and business kits.

Many people really dont understand what microdots are and the value they offer. DotGuard is also in the microdot industry but also offers personal identity theft protection programs in addition to asset marking. The key reason here is that when people have a laptop or cellphone stolen there is greater chance of identity theft. Hence DotGuard is aiming at providing protection in both areas. More details can be found at www.micro-dots.org or www.dotguard.org
