It’s all over the news, but I couldn’t help doing a blurb on the Macbook Air.  To say that Apple creates buzz is an understatement.  The buzz for their MacWorld conference was that they were going to release an ultra-portable.  Well, they did that and some.

When it comes to mobility, people learn very quickly that small and light are the way to go.  Who wants to tote around a giant brick?  It seems that most computer manufacturers have a hard time grasping this concept.  So, Apple made the MacBook Air.  And it weighs 3 pounds, is .16-.76 inches thick, with a width of 12.8 inches and a depth of 8.94 inches.  The Air also sports a 13.3 inch 1200×800 led backlit display.  The keyboard is backlit (with ambient light sensor for brightness control of keyboard and display) and the mouse touchpad is multi-touch sensitive, hence its larger than normal appearance.

And, surprisingly, this computer doesn’t really skimp on performance.  The processor is an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB on-chip shared L2.  It has 800 MHZ front side bus with 2GB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM onboard.  It also sports a 80GB 4200 rpm drive.  But you can get an optional 64GB SSD (solid state drive), ie no moving parts.  I would go for that.  It comes with integrated camera.  And the batteries can last 5 hours.  The laptop contains no optical drive, but they have come up with an interesting way to wirelessly pump that info from another Mac.  Even the migration and Time Machine backups can be performed via wireless.  It, as you could have guessed, wireless at the 802.11n spec and bluetooth.  A flip down compartment unveils audio out, USB 2.0, and micro-DVI.

The only other thing I would want on this thing would be an oled display.  Of course, no one will have that just yet.  Other than that, this is a game changing laptop.
