Yep, you read that right. Garmin, a leader in GPS devices is going to make a foray into the cell phone market with a new phone called Nuvifone. The possibilities are intriguing and the device looks pretty cool. But will Garmin be able to get its foot in the door in an already crowded market?
“The nüvifone is an innovative mobile phone that has a wide range of advanced yet easy-to-use features. The all touchscreen device is the first of its kind to integrate premium 3.5G mobile phone capability with an internet browser, data connectivity, personal messaging, and personal navigation functions in one device. When powered on, the 3.5-inch touchscreen display reveals three primary icons — “Call,” “Search,” and “View Map” which allow the user to effortlessly master the nüvifone’s functions.”
The device will incorporate Google local search. This will allow users to tap into a gigantic local database of venues. Nuvifone also incorporates voice direction capability. The Nuvifone also does geotagging pictures. That’s pretty geeky. The Nuvifone also incorporates a camera and mp3 mpeg4 playback. The Nuvifone integrates “premium 3.5G mobile phone capability with an internet browser, data connectivity, personal messaging, and personal navigation functions in one device.” We’ll see if people actually buy it.
