That title seems to be a contradiction in terms and, in a way, it is. But Ambient has come up with a really cool way to grab those vocal commands and use them. This is extremely helpful to folks who cannot vocalize these speech thoughts.
You have to hand it to Michael Callahan and Thomas Coleman. They are definitely some rule breakers in terms of thinking outside the box. They founded Ambient to help severely disabled folks communicate. What a great cause. To do that, they had to find a way to transduce electric impulses that never make it to vocalization. What they came up with has ramifications in a much wider field than they initially thought.
Audeo’s system can also be used as a non-vocal command base for folks who use wheelchairs. They also envision folks using this to talk via cell in a silent way. Have you ever heard someone on a bluetooth headset phone conversation? And how many times did you think they were talking to you? Yeah, point taken. In any case, I think we can all hope that this goes a long way to helping people.
